The Maine Coon is a powerfully built North American semi-longhaired cat with lynx ears and a tail resembling a curved Turkish sword.
History
The breed appeared by crossing local short-haired cats with foreign long-haired cats, most likely the Turkish Angora, brought to New England by sailors, and received its name due to its unusual tail and specific color. The breed got its name from the state of Maine and the word raccoon, for its resemblance to this animal. In 1968, several breeders founded the Maine Coon Cat Breeders Association (MCBFA), which by 1980 had 1,000 fanciers and 200 catteries.
